Welcome___________________________
Shalom! I am Morah Efrat and I am honored to be your child’s Hebrew Teacher. I look forward to a wonderful year of learning and new made memories. This year, I look forward to sharing the Hebrew language and Israel culture with your child. My goal is to strengthen your child’s reading, writing and comprehension abilities as well as provide your child with the tools needed to converse in Hebrew. I am looking forward to a Fantastic year together.
Homework Policy
When my students receive homework it is expected that it be returned on the following day. Occasionaly the students will receive a project that will be due at a later time. That time will be clearly stated and I will make sure to remind the students of the day/date their project is due. Please make sure to check their homework folder daily for homework. If your child takes home their Hebrew folder, they MUST return it the next day. I have been creating a homework page, detailed with the homework for each day of the week. Please come back to this website to see if there are any changes or updates.
Please note that unless you have an excused absence, I will deduct 10 points (1 grade)from the grade for each day the homework/project is late.

Kindergarten – Kitah Gan גן
This week we will be working on the letter Kaf. I will be sending home a sheet on Monday, with all the Kaf vocabulary words. Last week I sent a sheet home which included letters, vowels, and some vocabulary words. I am hopeful that your child was able to go through it and review. This Thursday we will learn a new vowel “oh” and practice reading words using that vowel.
Letters we learned so far (Alef =silent, A, Bet =B, Vet =V, Gimmel =G, Dalet =D, Hay =H, silent, Vav =V, Zayin=Z, Chet =Ch, Tet= T, Yud=Y, Kaf=K and the vowels “ah” (popsicle stick – line or t under the letter), “ee” (one dot under the letter, mousehole squEEk) and “eh” (2 or 3 balls – JuggEling), “oh” (one dot on the TOP or a vav with a dot above it = think of a cOcOnut that falls from the top).
Words we can read: Gahg (roof), Dahg (fish), Gav (back), Abba (dad), Bah (came), Bahd (fabric), Vav (hook/hanger), Zahav (gold)., Yachad (together). This week they should also be reading Tov (good). I am so proud of my students! They are able to sound out the letters, read, write letters and write their Hebrew name in Hebrew. Way to Go!!!!
Homework
Practice letters, vowel and words at home from the information sheets sent home.

1st Grade – Kitah Alef כתה א_
Kita Alef is finishing the letter Chet this week. We are learning also about the Family and all the members of the family. I encourage the students to practice their reading skills at home to improve their reading fluency. Please remember to take approximately 10 minutes per day to go over the words, letters and vowels learned as we add to these with each letter. This week, on THURSDAY, we will be having our test on the letter Chet.
So far we learned the letters Alef-A or silent, Bet=B, Vet=V, Shin=Sh, Gimmel=G, Dalet = D, Hay= H or silent., Vav =V, Zayin =Z, Chet = Ch We have also learned the following vowels “ah” = popsicle sticks, sound of the letter or soft eh (2 dots one under the other), and the vowel “ee” which is shown as one dot under the letter or with a yud attached. (think of a mouse hole – squEEk). We have also learned the vowel “oh” Dot on top with or without a vav (cOcOnut). The students are doing well being able to decode the different letters to sound out words. Please review the words and letters with your child. We will have a test on the Chet words towards the end of next week.
I find that the best way to study the Hebrew language is through Index Cards (one side English, the other side Hebrew). The students can copy the words as sight words (they will not be able to read all the words at this time). A good game is to put all the words face down with the Hebrew word showing and the students say the English translation. They look in the back to check if it is correct and then get to keep it. If they did not get it correct it goes back to the table and they have to wait at least 1 turn before going back to that card. Play together! Its a wonderful dinner-time game.
When the students feel that you are participating and that they are teaching YOU… they will internalize the information better. Please return the index cards to school the day after it is given so I can check it, and give it a grade. After that – the index cards are to stay at home … so think of a good place and way to organize it.
Homework: Packet is sent home on Monday.
Monday - Read page 55 and sign page after it is read. Return book to class. Study index cards.

We will learn new words with Ayin on Wednesday and the students will create index cards using the words. We will also read a new story and play games on the smartboard using our Aryot CD. Please make sure that your child begins to study the words daily so he or she will be prepared for the test when it comes. Last Friday we learned about the Galillee. We will complete the activities in our Israel book on Friday. The student are truelly enjoying learning about Israel. They are inquizitive, and participate in the discussions.
