Incoming First Graders: In order to prepare for 1st grade please follow these tips 🙂

Reading: Your child should be able to read all these words: Reading Wonders Kindergarten Sight Words. If you would like to get a head start on 1st grade words, here is another list of Reading Wonders (Reading Curriculum) words: Unit 1 High Frequency Words Your child should also know all the letters of the alphabet & their sounds. Please focus on the vowels 🙂 Finally, your child will be expected to read alone towards the 2nd quarter of 1st grade. Because of this, please have them practice their “Reading Stamina” by having them read independently non-stop for 5 minutes, slowly increasing the time to 15 minutes.

Math: Addition & Subtraction in 1st grade gets a bit complex. My biggest tip would be to begin addition/subtraction fact memorization with the use of flashcards that are available in the dollar store or dollar section of Target 🙂 doing so will greatly benefit your child with the Algebra portion (yup! Algebra!) of the addition/subtraction chapters.

Technology: If you have access to IXL please complete all Kindergarten Lessons (Math & Language Arts tab). If your child has access to iReady, please have them continue doing lessons.

While summer is a time for family and play, your teamwork and cooperation with these skills is greatly appreciated. Thank you for
encouraging learning at home! Have a great summer!
